How I (partially) spent my 6/6/06
Yesterday, I visited an upscale auction house in Bethesda, where I festively lusted after an original Goya etching depicting an aristocratic Spanish toddler, holding a large sword and ready to stab any poor rabble-rouser. Sure, the price wouldn't be determined until bidding ends this weekend, but the work is valued at $2,500 -- and art thief is really a man's job. I disdainfully settled for the first pretty French parlor set that caught my eye, if only to get over Goya's out-of-my-league work. A woman whose meticulously shaped and unmoving face looked like a pile of finely crafted wax was circling the set, and her fallen expression indicated that she either needed another facelift or was thinking the same thing that I was, "such a wonderful parlor set! Carved oak with patina accents, finely woven caned backing -- AND SHINY EMERALD UPHOLSTERY?! Bitch, please!" When our disappointed eyes briefly met, I told her that this choice of upholstery is absolutely sinful.
